Named after Paris’s 11th arrondissement, Onzieme brings big-city energy to a low-key Canberra corner. The sleek, loosely European wine bar is all wood-fire aromas, bare wooden tables and stools, and bustling in-the-know vibe. The wine list sparkles with personality, grouping natural drops under headings like “a bit weird” or “skinsy”, and energised staff are keen to guide you from a simple snack to a full-on feast. Well-matched, ever-changing plates are generous and inventive, occasionally swerving into Asia, as seen in a Korean-style gim-bugak seaweed snack. Charred Goldstreet Dairy haloumi is scattered with sticky pecans and jammy figs, while a bright bowl of tomato consommé is dotted with alluring smoked oil. Crunchy blocks of potato galette are squiggled with cream cheese, making them some of the best hot chips you’ll ever eat. It’s all elegantly casual but supremely clever. And don’t miss the hidden basement bar, 11e Cave, for one last glass.
