At a time when a little respite from a chaotic world can seem like the ultimate luxury, it’s understandable why securing a table at Tedesca Osteria requires tenacity. The languid pace, flawless wine list, assured service and a beautiful dining room – subtly scented by wood smoke from the kitchen hearth – combine to make your shoulders relax even before chef Brigitte Hafner’s five-course set menu gets underway. The food continues the process, starting with snacks. There might be a perfectly crisp smoked duck brik “cigar” or robust wood-roasted Clarence River prawns slick with brandy butter, followed by tortellini filled with mascarpone and winter greens from Tedesca’s biodynamic garden. Slow-cooked chicken is earthy with Sherry and chorizo, while a layered masterpiece of caramelised Sturmer Pippin apple terrine teamed with black pepper crumble and swoon-worthy cardamom ice-cream is a spectacular finish. Sit back and feel the real world fade away.
