Housed in the former Salvation Army Printing Works, Lanson Place brings new polish to a storied corner of East Melbourne. It quietly emerged in late 2024, located between the stately Parliament precinct and the leafy tranquility of Fitzroy Gardens. The $80 million redevelopment strikes a balance between heritage charm and contemporary lines – all soaring glass, red brick bones and pared-back luxury.
The space
Inside, the mood is equally considered: light-filled spaces dotted with curated artworks and natural textures, anchored by a striking, sculptural lobby installation inspired by a paperbark tree. It’s the sort of inner-city stay where you’re as likely to rub shoulders with corporate high-flyers and theatre enthusiasts as you are Grand Slam champions during Australian Open summer stints.
The rooms
Serene and spacious, the rooms and residences are a lesson in understated elegance. Light spills through floor-to-ceiling windows, framing scenes of nearby gardens or Melbourne’s architectural mix. The interiors layer pale timber floors with bright whites and the occasional pop of colour – a scheme designed to soothe. Entry-level rooms start at 28 square metres, while the apartments are fitted with large soaking tubs and full kitchens, and the two penthouses boast sun-drenched rooftop terraces. Generously sized bathrooms are sleek and indulgent, with double vanities in larger rooms, plus Dyson hairdryers and heavenly scented Appelles amenities. And for those slow city mornings, blackout blinds and plush king beds are very conducive to a lie-in.
Food & drink
For a lobby restaurant, Chronicle 502 Bar & Dining exceeds expectations with its gleaming white marble, lofty ceilings, attentive service and a particularly impressive $48 steak. It’s an easy place to drop by for a low-key meal or a pre-show drink, just as long as you’re down with the comings and goings of fellow guests. Breakfast, meanwhile, is served upstairs in the cosier Albert Lounge, a more appropriate spot for a quiet morning coffee. But you’re in Australia’s culinary capital, so exploring Melbourne’s lively restaurant scene is a must. Fanciful French mecca Maison Bâtard is just a short stroll away, as are Embla and newly opened Ho Jiak Junda’s Playground. Otherwise, head north to Marion Wine Bar, Cutler or Poodle Bar & Bistro. Essentially, walk in any direction and you’re likely to stumble across one of the city’s best.
