As an opening gambit, the first course of The Agrarian Kitchen Restaurant’s eight-course set menu is pretty hard to beat. Served in a stylishly appointed section of a working greenhouse, it features artfully plated raw vegetables fresh from the verdant kitchen garden, it feature artfully plated raw vegetables fresh from the garden, perhaps accompanied by deep-flavoured, house-made miso and a glass of Derwent Valley sparkling wine. It’s a breathtaking overture for what’s to follow in the light-filled, high-ceilinged dining room. The approach – strictly seasonal cooking that heroes ingredients over cheffy flashiness – is never at the expense of flavour or creativity. There might be house-made cheeses, many in classic Euro style, sublimely textured raw lamb dusted with smoked paprika, pink eye potatoes in clear mussel broth topped with fried curry leaves, and an applause-worthy olive oil parfait with mulberries and lemon verbena. Brilliant service and a mostly Tassie drinks list make this one of Australia’s great dining experiences.
